Asparagus: The Food of LOVE
By Suzi Franks
I know valentine day has come and gone for this year, but with plenty more days left in the year, I bet some of those will be spent wooing the man or woman of your dreams. I am hear to tell you, forget the chocolates, forget the flowers, maybe keep the strawberries:) but, whatever you do DON"T forget the asparagus, it truly is THE vegetable of LOVE!! Firstly, it is the only plant to boast seperate but distinctive male and female plants. Secondly, it has a seductive shape, especially smothered in melted butter. OK, ok, thats enough this is a family post:) Folklore for many canturies has revered asparagus for it's aphrodiasic qualities. In India this seductive vegetable is known as 'Shatavari' meaning 'She who possesses a 100 husbands'Pretty amazing when some of us think one is enough!! Indian and Chinese medicine has used asparagus to promote loving feelings and develop inner peace. So, just what does asparagus have that other vegetables don't to be such a LOVE vegetable? The answer lies in the roots, they contain a substance called 'steriodal glycosides' which have been scientifically proven to enhance feelings of love and well being and they also elevate mood by their effect on hormone production. So, now you have it, when you want to woo and romance, reach for the asparagus, but hurry, it's usually only available for 4 weeks or so every year!! |
